You may have heard the term jailbreaking or rooting in regards to your mobile phone, but what is this and what does it really mean for you? And it is Risky? That all information is given in this post.

Jailbreaking and Rooting are processed by which users “hack” their own mobile device by altering its operating system and security features.
What Are The Risks After Jailbreaking or Rooting a Device?

First of all,

What is Rooting?

Rooting is a process that allows you to attain root access to the Andriod Operating system code (the equivalent term for Apple Device is jailbreaking). It gives you privileges to modify the software code on the device or install other software that the manufacture wouldn't normally allow you to and much more.
Or
It means remove software restrictions put into place by Google™ to gain the ability to replace the entire operating system.

Why do device users do this?

  • Customize user experience and expand functionalities.
  • Gain access to a greater variety of unofficial apps.
  • Unlock SIM cards in order to use the device with another carrier.

What is Jailbreaking?

Jailbreaking is the process of exploiting the flaws of a locked-down electronic device to install software other than what the manufacturer has made available for that device. Jailbreaking allows the device owner to gain full access to the root of the operating system and access all the features. It is called jailbreaking because it involves freeing users from the ‘jail’ of limitations that are perceived to exist.
Or
It means remove software restrictions put into place by Apple™ on devices that run the iOS operating system.

Why do device users do this?

  • Carry features over from one device to another.
  • Remove system apps that typically cannot be uninstalled.
  • Unlock SIM cards in order to use the device with another carrier.

Risks of Rooting/Jailbreaking

While Jailbreaking or Rooting your device to expand its functionalities may seem harmless, altering the operating system and device security actually exposes your sensitive personal data to cyber-fraud. Jailbreaking and Rooting weaken your device’s built-in security features. Fraudsters prey upon weakly secured mobile devices. They monitor device memory and app usage to gather personal information and distribute malicious apps that introduce your device to malware designed to compromise your personal data.

  • You can turn your smartphone into bricks. Well, not literally, but if you goof up the rooting process, meaning the code modifications, your phone software can get so damaged that your phone will basically be as useless as a brick.
  • Your phone warranty turns void. Even though rooting isn't illegal, manufactures try to fight it. Gaining root access will immediately void your warranty. If something happens to your software or hardware, you won't get it fixed by the phone provider.
  • Your phone is more vulnerable to malware and hacking. You might gain access to more apps and features, but that also means that you'll have to be very selective with what you download on your phone. Some apps might contains malware and steal your sensitive data like login details, passwords, or even payment details. Others might even grant hackers complete access to your phone.

What Can You Do?

Do not jailbreak or root your mobile device or download unofficial apps to a jailbroken or rooted device. sure that your mobile device and the information stored on it is as secure as it can be.
